Life in the time of a Fuel Blockade. The blackouts have reached up to 30 hours in some parts of town, new sanctions have been applied that will stop families and friends sending money, clothing and food to Cuba, Visa and Mastercard transactions have been shut down, the total fuel blockade has reached its 5th month, a US deal to sell fuel to the private sector in Cuba had been cancelled, major shipping firms have suspended services and European and Canadian companies have abandoned or suspended business. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has stated the obvious: the fuel restrictions and extraterritorial sanctions are directly harming the Cuban people, particularly the vulnerable. Children are dying because doctors lack access to medical supplies and medicines. Humanitarian aid cannot be delivered or distributed. Unemployment is increasing, inflation is running at 70% for ordinary Cubans, according to some economists and businesses are closing. Food and medicines are spoiling due to lack of refrigeration, surgeries have been suspended due to lack of power, garbage cannot be collected and water cannot be pumped to homes. This is according to UN human rights experts collective punishment of civilians and will result in grave humanitarian consequences for the people of Cuba. Life during the fuel blockade. The Saturday markets were not bustling today with people purchasing their viandas (sweet potato, pumpkin, taro, yams, or cassava), rice, sugar - raw and white, vegetables, herbs, garlic or tumeric, pork, mutton or chorizo, pineapple, bananas, honey, tomato purée, vinegar, kidney beans, cornmeal, guava paste or savoury biscuits. The farmers trucks, classics from the 50’s powered by diesel, didn’t arrive today. A disaster for the elderly and families who usually arrive on foot early in the morning, before it gets too hot, and all the best produce has been sold. Since Covid thousands of locals have trekked across town to this market beside the baseball stadium to do their weekly grocery shop. Farmers have come from all over the Provence of Sancti Spiritus and possibly neighbouring ones too. Demand has always been high in this tourist town. Prices are more economical at the Kareoke Market making it a much more popular place to shop than the smaller privately owned kiosks and shops that might be closer to home. Hence you can be guaranteed to meet up with friends, neighbours and family. Normally there is a sea of people carrying baskets, patiently waiting in line in front of a stall or behind a truck. But today the laden trucks didn’t come. Energy starvation impacting ordinary people and causing hardship particularly for the elderly and families. Wouldn’t you think that the almost unanimous vote every year in favour of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba, by the UN Assembly 193 nations, might have encouraged the US Congress to question the moral and political correctness of their policy towards the Cuban people who pose no threat and wish them no harm. #market #fresh #family #food #politics Life before the Fuel Blockade. Most of the people in this video are now victims of energy starvation. Up to 30 hours without electricity. Little or no ability to store perishable food, wash clothes, clean their houses, water their plants or bath themselves. Cooking, sleeping, working a daily challenge. Humanitarian experts have warned that current US sanctions have grave consequences for human rights. Few children in Trinidad will be enjoying a Chupa Chupa in these dire times. Millions of people from around the world have visited this square and this UNESCO world heritage town in the past 20 years. They all know Cubans are a peaceful, friendly and hospitable people who don’t deserve to be so inhumanly treated by their northern neighbour. End the fuel blockade, abolish sanctions, remove Cuba from the state sponsor of terrorism listing and end collective punishment of 10 million people. We know from hard-learned experience that it is better to encourage and support reform than to impose policies that will render a country a failed state.
